A good thing happened, I think?

Posted on

During my weekend grocery run, someone asked me to help them. When this happens, its usually a certain demographic that mistakes me for the "help". It always invokes a shitty feeling because they feel just because I am brown I must be a store employee since someone of my skin colour is not capable of being anything than part time help.

This weekend this did not happen. It was an older lady with missing teeth who had a hard time enunciating her words. At first I was like "Sorry I don't work here", but she kept persisting. I tried listening harder and following her pantomimes to figure out what was going on. She was fulfilling an order in some app, and needed two tubs of a certain kind of hummus. She could not reach the top shelf where the second tub of hummus lay and was requesting me to use my height to reach it for her. Once I understood that, I happily helped get the hummus and apologized for being defensive. Then I felt embarassed(?) for my assumptions.

So maybe a good thing didn't happen? But a bad thing that happens regularly did not. Which feels nice. It's hard to articulate the feeling because most people I know would never have this happen to them. It's also a very weird conversation starter "hey guess who has two thumbs and didn't get racially profiled at a grocery store today? This guy (points to self)".

But I'd still like to put this somewhere so I can hopefully reminisce one day in the future. Like that lazy day post, it was a good day.
